Many years ago, a lonely traveler had to spend a night on the tree to escape the clutches of a hungry tiger. During the night he, unwittingly, dropped leaf after leaf of the tree atop a 'shivalingam' to prevent himself from falling asleep.
The day has been celebrated ever since as Shiva Ratri. This year, we have Shilparamam presenting 'Sivananda Lahari', a disposition of cultural events, to celebrate the anniversary of that night on the trees.
Malladi Chandrasekhara Shastri's speech on the importance of this festival will be followed by a program titled "Siva Kavi Sammelanam", in which Madugula Naga Phani Sharma, Eluripati Anantramaiah, Garikapati Narsimha Rao, Viswanatha Pavani Shastry, Akkiraju Sundara Ramakrishna and Jonna Vittula Ramalingeshwara Rao are expected to take part.
That apart, there will also be Kuchipudi and Bharata Natyam dances connected to Shaivism, such as "Siva Hela", "Perini" and "Ananda Tandavam".
The program is expected to go on till the wee hours, in view of "Siva Jagarana".
