BITS-Pilani Hyderabad is hosting its 2nd annual cultural festival, Pearl 2011, from 10th to 13th February at its campus in Jawarnagar. The 4-day extravaganza of events, competitions, and professional shows will have a melange of art, literature and music, as described below:
Dance Events
Terpsichore - A group dance event with 3 rounds - Group dance, Footloose and Prop round.
Black "O" White - The customary couple dance. It doesn't have to be a male with his female counterpart. Any two dancers who can complement each other can take part.
Old Skool - A street dance event. It can be any dance - gambol, hop, jig, prance, sway and trip.
Abhivyaktika - Spanning the classical dance forms of Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam.
Soul'O - All forms of dances are allowed, and weightage will be given to costumes, music and choreography.
Drama Events
Expresso - A mime event which requires participants to portray a play pertaining to a theme through actions.
The Spoof - An event in which participants get to spoof movies. The participants are required to present an alternative, objective view of conventional cinema.
Silence Please - Be an artist and create your own masterpiece of irony.
Manouvre - Guide your team by transforming your scripts into enthralling plays.
Music Events
Till Deaf Do We Part - A Western music competition
Indiana Tones - This event comprises of 2 separate categories - Indian rock and movie songs.
Gandhaara - The event comprises of 4 categories - Carnatic vocals, Hindustani vocals, string / wind instrumentals and instrumental percussion.
Voyage 53 - A solo instrumental event. Participants will be provided with a backing track according to the instrument they are playing for the second half of their performance.
Western Acoustic Jam - Participants should play either acoustic versions of western songs or original compositions. A basic drumkit and keyboard (in piano mode) will be provided on stage.
Arts
Pulp Fiction - Participants have to build structures of leviathan proportions using stuff with sticks and whatever is lying around.
Inception - Participants have to paint based on a given topic. The theme for painting will be given on the spot. The participants are expected to use either water colors or poster colors.
Illusionist - Create an illusion using color pencils/oil pastels on paper.
Schedios - This is a sketching event. The participants have to sketch based on a topic given to them. The topic for sketching will be given on spot.
Impressionz - Participants have to design a tattoo on their partner's body using sketch pens provided to them. The theme for the design will be given on spot.
Final Fantasy - Participants have to select a painting of their choice, scan/take a photo of it, and edit it using a software provided. Priority will be given to the entries looking most natural, well-edited and blended.
VFX
3-D Modeling - Participants will be asked to imagine how places/things would look in the future or past, and make a 3-D model of the same.
Flip Book - A slow-motion animation. An object/character is animated by moving it sequentially through various poses. Regular snapshots of the object/character are taken and are arranged in an order. When played at a certain speed, these image frames blend together into a continuous motion picture. This can be done with a minimal requirement of camera and a slide show generator.
Frames - A contest conducted by the VFX Club to promote movie-making skills and related videography techniques. This contest provides a very good podium to showcase creative skills in story-telling and movie-making.
Photography
The Shutter Island - An exhibition-cum-competition, which consists of vast and exquisite collection of snaps.
Olym'Pics' - Be 'the fast and the curious' and complete the given tasks with proofs (photos). Only first 20 entries will be taken in for consideration.
Amalgamate - Participants will be provided with a few photographs for which they have to give captions.
'Shot' Thru The Heart - A tribute to St. Valentine. Participants are required to bring a photograph that they think truly defines love.
Quiz
The BBQ - The BITS Business Quiz (BBQ) brings together students from various universities across India to battle it out in an exciting business quizzing session.
Alea Jacta Est - An open quizzing event
Catch-22 - A literature quiz
The Longest Yard - The sports quiz
Equilibrium - The sci-tech quiz
Evevno - The online treasure hunt
Rock 'n' Rolla - The entertainment quiz
Jeepers Creepers - An audio visual quiz
Enter The Matrix - The movie quiz
Literary
Face-Off - A debate. Engage your opponents in a war of words and ideas, as you battle it out till the end.
Dead Poets Society - There are 2 categories - prose and poetry. Participants may take part in only one.
Wordly Matters - A puzzle solving event
Last Man Standing - A JAM event
Sudden Death - An informal extempore event
Pro Nites
11th February - Classical night featuring Carnatic vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan, Pianist Anil Srinivasan and flautist Navin Iyer
12th February - Rock night by Dark Tranquility from Sweden
13th February - Pop night by Strings
Entry is open only for students and participants, however, Pro Nites is open for public through tickets - Rs. 500 for 12th February, Rs. 200 for 13th February and Rs. 100 for 11th February.
