Remember the Cigars Of The Pharaoh fakir who urges his victims to look into 'those eyes', and just a second of direct eye-contact ensures that the poor sucker of a dupe has conked-off into a state that can be revoked only by a falling coconut aimed at his head. Sure most of us have tried oscillating a pendulum into someone's face and expected them to do our wildest bidding.
Time to shatter all those comic-enforced myths with a little sleight of the eye by Hypno Kamalakar. His program commemorates the birth of Abraham Thomas Kovoor on the April 10th, the man well known as the Father Of The Rationalist Movement in India. This Kerala born hypnotist moved to Srilanka, and came back to India a number of times on his campaigns to expose fraud godmen and shatter the foundation of blind religious beliefs and practices. He is even remembered for the time he challenged Satya Sai Baba for a test, which the latter refused.
Hypno Kamalakar has followed in his footsteps and dedicated his life to the destruction of blind-belief that impact the standard of living of much of the already destitute populace. His wife Padma, joins him in the endeavour, as their son and daughter Saroja Rai and Himakar, 8 years and 4 years respectively and already prodigious conjurers themselves, have begun on their quest to expose the pernicious beliefs.
The two children will perform Miracle Magic, an act in which they conjure up Vibhuti, Harati Kappuram, fires without a spark etc. In addition, they will explain the tricks so that people can understand what the deal really is the next time a bearded and beaded swami does the same thing.
Padma is the first lady hypnotist in India and has multiple qualifications in clinical psychology which she practices. Kamalakar has done 6900 shows and written 48 books, while his wife has written 18. The children have been recognized by SAARCs magic convention as Little Magicians, often emerging the winners in categories in which they were around 10 years too young.
Kamalakar's book Teaching Psychology will be released on the day. The program begins at 1800 hrs at Thyagaraja Gana Sabha. Please contact Ch Venkata Ramana at 92465-20050 for further details.
