Hyderabad Book Fair 2010: Events in Hyderabad

REVIEW FOR HYDERABAD BOOK FAIR 2010

The Hyderabad Book Society of Hyderabad is organising the 25th Hyderabad Book Fair from 16th to 26th December at the People's Plaza grounds. Since it is the silver jubilee year of the book fair, the society is making all efforts to make the fair a grand success. About 200-250 stalls will be set up at the fair which promises to be a treat for bookworms. This annual book fair is the 3rd largest in India after those at Delhi and Kolkata.

Of the 200-250 book stalls, 110 stalls will be exhibiting publications in English language, 10 stalls have been earmarked for daily news papers, 50 stalls will be exhibiting Telugu publications, and several stalls will be there for Hindi and Urdu languages. Public sector publishers like National Book Trust, Kendra Sahitya Academy, Publications Division, Telugu Academy, and Telugu University will also be participating in this exhibition. Publishers from Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Vijayawada besides those from Hyderabad, will be participating in this exhibition.

There are more than 1,00,000 titles to choose from on literature, astrology, fiction, personality development, children's comics and books, software and engineering by major publishing houses including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, British Council, Orient Longman, Publication Division, S Chand, Kuwait Embassy, National Book Trust, Visalandhra Book House, Prajashakthi, Navayuga Book House, Best Books, Navodaya, Emesco, Milind Prakashan, Kendra Sahitya Academy, and many other Urdu, Hindi and Telugu publishers. For children, there is a wide variety of books including Panchatantra and Jataka Tales, Jungle Book, Time Machine, and books by Stephen Hawking.

Hyderabad Book Society was formed by well-known and renowned publishers and sellers in 1985 to organize book exhibitions. The first book fair was organized in City Grandhalaya in Ashoknagar. Noticing the overwhelming response, venue of the exhibtion was changed to Nizam College Grounds, and subsequently to Public Gardens, Exhibition Grounds, Kesav Memorial High School grounds, and in the last 4 years, to People's Plaza grounds. The main objective of these exhibtions is to inculcate book-reading habit among one and all, and continuously increase their knowledge base.

During the 10-day fair, book releases, lectures and discussions by authors will be organised every day on different aspects of literature, poetry and personality development, and on changing trends in media. A general discount of 10% will be available on all the purchases made in the exhibition.

The fair will be open daily between 2 pm and 9 pm. The entry to the fair is Rs. 5 per head. However, there is no entry charge for students, journalists and teachers. Please contact 2766-0013 / 3918-8930 / 2460-2946 for further details.
