7-year-old Katharina is spending her vacation with grandpa Sylvester, a 76-year-old scruffy astronomer who is lost in the world of stars. His nonchalant attitude towards the lively and cheerful Katharina gradually undergoes a change when the little girl finds one-half of a map that leads to a treasure. She resolves to find the treasure come what may. Hesitant at first, grandpa Sylvester decides to help her. He remembers that the other half of the map is with his childhood friend Egon, who lives in the USA. Katharina writes a letter to him but it is returned with a stamp saying "forwarding address unknown". Unbeknownst to them, Egon has again been living in Austria since long and one day, when he accidentally bumps into them, the way to the treasure proves irresistible.
