Renowned ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas will perform in town tonite to raise funds for the Venkatesh Muscular Dystrophy Foundation (VMDF).
Udhas has an excellent fan following in the twin cities, and holds a special place in the hearts of discerning music lovers. He has rendered playback for many Bollywood films since the early '70s, but his claim to fame was Naam (1986), for the ghazal Chitti Aayi Hai, which made him a household name.
Udhas is acclaimed as one of the best ghazal singers of our times, and is responsible for changing the world of ghazals as we know it now. His arrival not only brought ghazals back from the dead, but also made people think differently about the genre. His beautiful voice, combined with good lyrics and melodious music, is capable of making anyone fall in love with ghazals.
Udhas has plenty of work outside the film industry, singing ghazal compilations and performing around the world. He has toured with his brother Manhar and many other ghazal singers, too. He recorded several albums, and toured the world as an accomplished ghazal singer. He received the Padmasri, the 4th highest civilian award of the Government of India, in 2006.
