On the occasion of the All-India Crafts Mela from 13th December to 4th January, Shilparamam is presenting a folk song recital by Jangi Reddy & group, on 26th December. Accompanied by Sudhakar on the keyboards, Shiva Kumar on the dholak, Narendra on the dappu and Ramanadham on the pads, Jangi Reddy, along with Sunita, Renuka, Shivanagulu, Sikander, Krishnayya Goud and Vidyananda Chary, will sing some popular Telugu folk songs.
Born in Nagar Kurnool of Mahaboobnagar district, Jangi Reddy was tempted to learn folk music at a very young age, influenced by the rural culture that he grew up in. He accompanied his mother Lakshmamma, a folk singer, to several concerts, but it was the poet Goreti Venkanna's writings that made him quit his profession as an electronics engineer and take up folk art full time.
With titles like Janapada Kokila and Janapada Kala Ratna having been conferred upon him, Reddy has given about 3,000 performances in Andhra Pradesh, and about 200 performances in the rest of India. This year, he has also performed at Singapore and Malaysia, at the Ugadi celebrations.
In 1998, he established a folk institute called Janapada Kala Sravanthi in Jadcherla, that encourages rural youngsters to take up folk art, and also initiates them into performances.
