This milkman has more to say about the Russian Revolution, than the Tsar himself.
Expressions Theatre Group is organizing the staging of the play Fiddler On The Roof. The story is set in a small Ukranian village, during 1910. Unrest grips the country - unrest caused by pogroms as Jews were driven en masse from their homes, by rising anti-Tsarist sentiment, and by the approach of World War One.
The historical realities of the time do not simply provide a colorful backdrop to this story; they are central to all that transpires. A central theme is how the old traditions are disintegrating under the pressure of a world culture that is being re-shaped by industrialization and mechanization.
One of the traditions that is changing is the means by which Jews are married: a matchmaker chooses a wife for a man, the girl's father approves the match, and the ceremony is held. That's how Tevye and his wife, Golde, were united, and that's how the hard-working milkman believes his five daughters should find their husbands.
But Tzeitel has other, modern ideas. She spurns Tevye's selection of a mate, a wealthy butcher, in favor of her childhood sweetheart.
Tevye eventually assents to her choice, but, in doing so, he acknowledges the freedom of all his children. Subsequently, his second daughter decides to marry a young revolutionary, and the youngest falls in love with a non-Jew. This is one match that Tevye cannot accept, and he warns of dire consequences if Chava goes through with this marriage.
The cast includes Raghuram, Unnati, Tina Tomas, Pankaj Kashyap, Rajeetha and Gayatri, among others. Expressions Theatre Group has been successful in staging plays in the twin cities. It has also been involved with many corporate companies, providing professional and advisory services in the field of stage and dramatics. It also conducts theater workshops for children.
