Kolkatans believe that there is a market for anything Kolkatan, anywhere. Whether in the Union government, or in the Indian cricket team, or in Hyderabad. And this week will perhaps prove them right again.
A group of 6 painters are exhibiting their paintings at Chitramayee - State Gallery of Fine Arts, from 1st to 8th April. The artists, Gour Ghosh, Subrata Chowdhury, Rajib Sur Roy, Utpal Ghosh, Subrata Ghosh and Joydev Bala, all from Kolkata, are exhibiting 44 of their works.
Gour Ghosh is a self-taught artist who's been drawing and painting since 1954. He has participated in various group shows, at All-India Annual Exhibition of Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata in 1982, 1989, 1990, 1994 & 1996; the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 1989 & 1996; Rajya Charukala Pradarshani, Govt. of WB, in 1990, 1991 & 1996, 1-man shows at the Kolkata Information Centre, Kolkata, in 1979; the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 1989, 1990 & 1991; and the Grindlays Bank Gallery, Kolkata, in 1992. He was awarded the Certificate of Merit at the Rajya Charukala Pradarshani in 1990.
Subrata Chowdhury has graduated from Govt. College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, in 1976. He has exhibited his paintings in one-man shows at the Lalitkala Academy, New Delhi, in 1992; the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 2005; and Chitramayee - State Gallery of Fine Arts, Hyderabad, in 2006, and in group shows at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 1982, 1983 & 2007; Gallery BF 14, Salt Lake, Kolkata in 1991; the Lalitkala Academy, New Delhi, in 1991; the Nehru Centre Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2005; the Samokal Art Gallery, Kolkata, in 2006; the Lalitkala Academy, New Delhi, in 2006; the Birla Academy of Art a Culture, Kolkata, in 2006; and Chitrakoot Art Gallery, Kolkata, in 2006. He was awarded the National Award in 1999, and the Utsav Puraskar from USA in 2003.
Rajib Sur Roy has done his Diploma in Applied Arts (1st Class) from the Indian College Of Art & Draftsmanship, Kolkata, in 1991. He received the Grant-In-Aid from the Govt. of West Bengal in the field of fine arts for excellence. He has held a one-man show at the Grindlays Bank Gallery, Kolkata, in 1992, and has participated in group exhibitions at the Kolkata Information Centre in 1993; the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, 1989 through 1998, and in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005; and the Birla Academy of Art & Culture in 2004.
Utpal Ghosh has a Diploma in Fine Arts (painting) from the Indian College Of Art & Draftsmanship, Kolkata, in 1991. He has held a solo show at the Grindlays Bank Gallery, Kolkata, in 1992, and has been part of group exhibitions at the Kolkata Information Centre in 1993; the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, from 1989 to 1998, and in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005; and the Birla Academy of Art & Culture in 2004.
Subrata Ghosh has done his Bachelor in Visual Arts in 2000 from the Rabindra Bharati University (the Indian College Of Art & Draftsmanship), Kolkata. He has been part of group exhibitions at the Gaganendra Pradarshanshala, Kolkata, in 1998; the annual exhibition of painting at the Indian College Of Art & Draftsmanship, Kolkata, in 1998 to 2000; the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 2002 & 2006; the annual art exhibition of painting at Habra Banipur Art Society from 2004 to 2006; the Idiyas Gallery, Kolkata, in 2006 & 2007; the Gallery Nakshatra, Kolkata, in 2006 & 2007; the Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata, in 2005, and Kalamela organised by the Birla Academy Of Art & Culture in 2004.
Joydev Bala is a BVA graduate from Rabindra Bharati University (the Indian College Of Art & Draftsmanship, Kolkata), class of 2000. He has been part of group shows at the Metropolitan Art Salon, Kolkata, in 2006; the Academy of Fine Arts in 2006; the Birla Academy in 2005; the Annual Exhibition at the Banipur Art Society & Institute of Culture in 2005; Kalamela at the Birla Academy in 2004; and the Annual Exhibition at the Indian College Of Art And Draftsmanship in 1997, 1998 & 2000.
