One night, he watches his friend die in a gang fight. This marks the beginning of his journey out into the city. Bernie scams his way into working at a club where he finds favour with the owner (Jonathan Piennar), who is also named Bernard. He works himself up and climbs the ladder of success from bar hand to manager.
However, this new life he lives comes to a halt when the owner shoots the right hand man of Mr. Kuyser (Kevin Smith), a gangster who heads the brotherhood. Bernie soon realizes he has to toughen if he wants to survive.
