On the occasion of the Devi Navratris, the Shankar Math at Motinagar is organising a Navratri Music Festival from 12th to 21st October. This evening, Kamala Seetaraman, along with her disciples Rajni Jambunathan, Mridulababu and Vijayalakshmi Ranganathan, will sing some Devi keertanas.
Kamala Seetaraman is a 65-year-old senior Carnatic vocalist. With more than 1,000 concerts to her credit, she believes that performing in temples and in the presence of peethadipatis rates higher than commercial concerts. This is the reason that she ignored name and fame, concentrating only on temples, festivals and ashrams. She has performed in the presence of Swamy Govinda Damodara at Trichy, Sadguru Kandukuri Sivananda Murthy of Anandavanam at Bheemili, the Shankaracharyas of Kanchi Kamakoti, and at the Brahmotsavams in many temples.
Seetaraman has experience of more than 50 years in the field of music, and had started learning music from Gouri, at Chennai. She thereafter learnt under Venkataramaiah at the Annamalai University and under Vaidyanatha Iyer in Hyderabad. She has been teaching music to many students, both children and housewives, at her residence in Motinagar, since 20 years, without charging any fee. She teaches Narayani slokas and Naama sankeertanas regularly.
