Chitramayee - State Gallery Of Fine Arts is organising an exhibition of paintings by Dr. Lal Ratnakar from Ghaziabad, from 12th to 21st October. A recent collection of about 38 paintings is on display.
Dr. Ratnakar's paintings are a poignant reflection of the multi-ferious and very often neglected facets of rural life. His canvases depict day-to-day concerns of rural men and women. He vividly portrays their everyday afflictions in wonderful color combinations. It's the women whose men are hundreds or thousands of miles away in distant lands in search of livelihood. The eagerly awaited letters and discussion over their contents are repeated between family members and friends. The village woman suffers loneliness in the privacy of her embroidered goonghat.
The artist also offers a glimpse of the rural man's life, with depiction of him relaxing under a peepal tree after a hard day's work in the fields. He captures these feelings with earthy, dark, rich and bold colors. The canvas comes alive with women, men, cattle, pots and the countryside landscape.
Born in 1957 at Jaunpur, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Ratnakar got his first exposure to the world of art in the form of wall-paintings done by the womenfolk in his village. Influenced by this, used to draw flowers, animals and birds on the walls of his house with charcoal.
He has done his M A in Drawing & Painting from Kanpur University, in 1978. It was during his reseach for his doctorate under Prof. Anand Krishan at the Banaras University that he got a direction to give vent to his creativity. Since then, he has exhibited his paintings in various art exhibitions, at Shyam Hari Singhania Art Gallery, Kanpur; National Museum, Chandigarh; thrice at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Design Art Gallery, Dubai; Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, and several group exhibitions and workshops all over the country.
