On the occasion of the 164th birth anniversary of saint Thyagaraja, as well as the 34th anniversary of the Samithi, Vignana Samithi is organising its annual Thyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival from 24th to 30th January at the Anand Nagar Community Hall, Khairatabad.
On 26th January, Salem Gayathri Venkatesan will present a Carnatic vocal recital at 7:00pm.
Gayathri's musical life was kindled under the guidance of her grandmother Rajammal, who was a disciple of the violin maestro Rajamanikkam Pillai. Gayathri had her early regular training under Ethapur Srinivasan, and later under Sulochana Pattabhiraman, and is currently taking advanced training under her guru Sangeetha Kala Acharya Prof. T R Subramanyam.
Gayathri stood first in an AIR music competition, and has been directly graded A. She has won many awards such as the Gandharva Vidhyadhara from Isai Pani Manram in 2002, the Youth Excellence Award from the Rotary Club in 2004 and the Isai Vallar from the Madras Connoisseurs' Club in 2006. She has done her M A and M Phil in music under the guidance of Dr. Radha Venkatachalam and her guru Prof. T R Subramanyam.
Vignana Samithi, which is in its 34th year of existence, tries to propagate classical music by organising music concerts every month. It provides a platform for upcoming artistes by giving them opportunities to perform, and at the same time, gets senior artistes to perform and conduct workshops. Many artistes have performed for the organisation including Dr. Balamurali Krishna, the Malladi Brothers, the Hyderabad Brothers and Sankaranarayanan.
