Carnatic Vocal By Aruna Sairam

Clearly, too many gurus aren't spoiling the broth. Here's an artiste who had music for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and as guests as well.



The South India Cultural Association (SICA), in association with Krishna & Suchitra Ella Foundation, is presenting a Carnatic vocal concert by Aruna Sairam, on 28th October, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. The concert is being organised in memory of Late B S Devarajul, an ardent lover of music, who had rendered significant service in social, spiritual and cultural fields. E S L Narasimhan, Governor of Andhra Pradesh, is the Chief Guest of the event.



Born in Mumbai into a musical family that played hosts to Ustad Amir Khan, T R Mahalingam and M S Subbalakshmi whenever they came visiting, Aruna was surrounded by music. Her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman was her first teacher, and she was subsequently taught by T Brinda (who was a student of Dhanamaal), K S Narayanaswamy, A S Mani (who was a disciple of Tiger Varadachari), T R Subbramaniam and Balamurali Krishna. She introduced Uthukadu Venkata Subbier's Kalinga Nardana Thillana in her concerts.



She won the title of Sur Mani, Best Musician Award by T N, Sangeeta Natak Academy, the Best Musician award by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, the Bombay Fellowship by the Dept. Of Culture (Govt. Of India), and many more awards.



SICA was founded in 1959 by Dewan Bahadur Aramuda Iyengar, the Finance Minister of Hyderabad's Nizam and a patron of Carnatic music. The association has, since then, organised more than 1,000 concerts. It has provided a basic platform for upcoming artistes that include U P Raju and Nagamani, Mandolin Srinivas and the Malladi Brothers.



SICA conducts workshops, felicitates artistes, and provides both moral and financial support to upcoming artistes. Dr. S Chakravarthy, IAS, former Chief Secretary to the Govt. Of AP, is the current President of the association, and R Chakrapani is the General Secretary.
