Hyderabad ghazal singer Pt. Vithal Rao is hosting a ghazal nite on 29th July, at La Makaan, Road No. 1, Banjara Hills. The concert will be followed by an open discussion with the singer by the audience.
Pt. Vittal Rao is a disciple of legendary Hindustani vocalist Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Born in the year 1929, he is considered the last court singer of the last Nizam of Hyderabad.
He usually sings ghazals written by Hyderabadi writers, in Urdu as well as in Hindi. Among his accompanists include Ustad Sardar Khan on the tabla. He has inspired a generation of ghazal singers from Hyderabad, and has also been a guru to many singers, including Kiran Ahluwalia.
Pt. Vittal Rao sings mostly Urdu ghazals written by Janaab Sayeed Shaheedi and Mehdi Hasan. Some of his ghazals are Ek chamele ke mandve tale, Maine teri aaakho mein pada, Sab bhool gaya bus yaad raha sirf Allah hi Allah, Aye mere ham nasheen and Nindiya Na Aaye.
