Two media houses of India and Pakistan - The Times Of India and the Jang Group - have come together to develop stronger diplomatic and cultural relations between India and Pakistan. Aman Ki Asha (Destination Peace) is a step towards this initiative. Various concerts will be held in 6 different cities (Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Hyderabad), in which music artistes from the two countries - Hariharan, Shubha Mudgal, Abida Parveen, Kailash Kher, Raha Fateh Ali Khan, Ghulam Ali, Wadali Brothers, Abu Muhammad, Parvathy Baul and Arif Lohar - will participate.
As part of the Hyderabad leg, Parvathy Baul and Arif Lohar will be performing at the Chowmahalla Palace, on 22nd January.
Parvathy Baul is a singer, painter and storyteller from West Bengal. Since 1995, she has performed in her home state Bengal and all over India. She was also invited to participate in several international festivals, including at the Festival De L'Imaginaire (Paris), Festival international Du Conte Et Du Monodrame (Beirut, Lebanon), and Ethnomad (Geneva, Switzerland). Baul is a religious sect of Bengal, whose followers are also travelling musicians who wander around the countryside singing what is called the Baul Gaan. Baul Gaan a popular and well known form of Indian folk music known the world over.
Arif Lohar is a Pakistani folk singer. He usually sings with native musical instrument resembling tongs (called a chimta). His folk music is representative of the traditional folk heritage of Pakistan. He is the son of folk singer Alam Lohar. He has been invited to sing in many parts of the world, including USA, Norway and the Middle East. His songs are based on Punjabi lyrics, and some of his albums include Bhangra Addicts, Legends Forever, Legends Of The Punjab, 21st Century Jugni, Jugni, Dhol II Dhol and Bhangra Tonight, out which Jugni recorded the highest sales in the folk category in Pakistan.
