PREVIEW FOR A DANCE NUMBER

P M Bhargava Foundation and ADNAT (Association for the promotion of DNA fingerprinting and other DNA Technologies) are organizing "Leelavati", an Odissi dance ballet, choreographed by Jhelum Paranjape, a noted Odissi danseuse and Director of Simitalay, Mumbai, as part of the Foundation's 13th annual celebrations.

The P M Bhargava Foundation, founded in the year 1989 by Dr. Pushpa Mitra Bhargava's well-wishers both within the CCMB and outside, has been organizing a number of events since its inception. Dr P M Bhargava is a internationally known scientist and is widely regarded as the architect of modern biology and biotechnology in India. He is also one of the most successful institution builders of the time, having conceived and built, amongst others, the world renowned CCMB (Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology) at Hyderabad. He has been closely concerned with policy making with regard to the problems of school education, science and the development of scientific temper in the country. He has over 60 major honors, awards and fellowships to his credit.

The Foundation, apart from arranging lectures, symposia and seminars on science and its social implications, and on other topics of contemporary importance, also organizes, from time to time, other activities that reflect Dr Bhargava's wide interests and philosophy.

And this evening, a dance ballet at the Ravindra Bharathi will follow the 13th annual lecture "Cells and the nature of life" by Prof. Paul Nurse, Director General, Imperial Cancer Research Fund, UK, in the auditorium of Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT).

The ballet will unfold mathematics through Odissi. It is a tribute to Leelavati, daughter of Bhaskaracharya, the great 12th century astronomer and mathematician, and is based on Bhaskaracharya's treatise, "Leelavati", a text of 261 slokas, each one of which presents a mathematical puzzle or concept. In the ballet she will present eleven slokas.
