4th CISM Military World Games: Events in Hyderabad

REVIEW FOR 4TH CISM MILITARY WORLD...

Hyderabad is hosting the 4th CISM Military World Games from 14th to 21st October, at various venues in the city. About 4,000 athletes, and 1,000 delegates and officials, from 106 member countries are participating in this prestigious event, dubbed the second largest sporting event in the world after the Olympics. Competitions will be held in 12 events at the venues, as per the schedule below:

15th to 20th October - Military Pentathlon and Judo, at the Golconda Artillery Centre
16th to 20th October - Shooting, at Lake Line Ranges in Secunderabad and SAAP Shooting ranges in University of Hyderabad campus
14th to 20th October - Parachuting, at the Hakimpet Air Force Station
15th to 18th October - Track & Field events, at the GMC Balayogi stadium, Gachibowli
15th to 20th October - Swimming & Diving, at Aquatic Complex, Gachibowli
14th to 20th October - Boxing, at Indoor Stadium, Gachibowli
15th to 20th October - Wrestling, at L B Indoor Stadium, Fateh Maidan
10th to 20th October - Football, at MCEME, 1 EME Centre, AOC and Golconda Artillery Centre
15th to 20th October - Handball, at Saroornagar Indoor Stadium
15th to 20th October - Volleyball, at Yousufguda Indoor Stadium for men, and EME Centre for women

The games will be declared open by the President of India Prathiba Patil, in the presence of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Dr. Y Rajashekhara Reddy, Chairman of CISM Brigadier General Gianni Gola, Union Minister for Defence A K Anthony, Governor of Andhra Pradesh N D Tewari, and other ministers from the state and the country. Major Rajyavardhan Rathore will light the torch.

The events for the opening ceremony include the theme song 'Play For The World' by Gaurav Mukherjee, a musical nite by Karunya and guitarist Benni Prasad, a fashion extravanganza by Manasi Scott, Indian martial arts such as Kalaripayattu of Kerala and Gatka from Punjab, tricolor sky diving display by the Akash Ganga team, stunts from Sarang helicopters, laser and firworks display, and dances and folk arts from various states such as Tappetagullu, Lambadi and Dhimsa dances.

Counseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) is the only military sports body that is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. The aims of CISM are to develop friendly relations between the Armed Forces of member nations. Headquartered at Brussels, the body has grown from five founder nations to 129 member countries. India joined this elite military sports body in 1999. The first CISM Military World Games were held in 1995, at Rome. This is the first time they are being held outside Europe.
