The 26th South Zone junior athletics championship, sponsored by Hyderabad 10K Foundation, will be organised by the Telangana Athletics Association on October 13 and 14 at GMC Balayogi Stadium (Gachibowli) here, according to Prof. K. Ranga Rao, secretary of the TAA.
The two-day meet will feature around 750 athletes and 105 events to be contested in eight age-groups, four each for boys and girls, for athletes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. A team from Andaman and Nicobar Islands is also expected to participate.
The meet assumes significance as the top two finishers in each event will be selected to represent South Zone in the National inter-zonals to be held at Ranchi (Jharkhand) from November 7 to 9.
Some of the familiar names who will be in action include Maymon Poulose of Kerala, who finished fourth in the Youth Olympic Games in 110m hurdles, discus thrower S. Mithra Varun of Tamil Nadu (fifth in Youth Olympic Games), 100m hurdles bronze medallist in the Lusofona Games M.N. Nasimudheen and middle-distance runner Mohamed Afsal of Kerala.
