South Indian Cultural Association, Hyderabad, and Vinjamuri Trust are organizing the 2-day Vinjamuri Memorial Concerts on 21st and 22nd October, at Ravindra Bharathi. These concerts are held in the memory of the late 'Ganakalanidhi' Dr. Vinjamuri Varadaraja Iyengar.
Hailing from Guntur district, Sri Varadaraja Iyengar was a musician, musicologist and composer, who belonged to the Sishyaparampara of Saint Thyagaraja. He was with AIR, Chennai and Hyderabad, and was instrumental in propagating Bhakthi Music over AIR.
Sri Varadaraja Iyengar was conferred with the title 'Ganakalanidhi' in 1958. He was also closely associated with the South Indian Cultural Association (SICA), Hyderabad, and was its Vice President for some time. Ever since his demise in 1991, SICA has been organizing the 'Vinjamuri Memorial Concerts' annually, jointly with the Vinjamuri Trust.
On 22nd October, the second day of the festival, Sri Maharajapuram Srinivasan will present a Carnatic vocal recital. He will be accompanied by M A Krishna Swamy on the violin, and Tanjore Kumar on the mridangam.
Sri Maharajapuram S. Srinivasan is the grandson of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer and son of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Maharajapuram Santhanam. He was a disciple of both and has been giving individual performances since 1986.
An A-grade artist of the AIR, he has performed all over India in leading sabhas, including the Music Academy, the Indian Fine Arts Society, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Tamil Isai Sangam in Chennai, and other Sabhas in New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, and regularly performing for the Doordarshan. A few titles conferred on him are Asthana Vidwan of the Vysaraya Mutt in Tumkur, Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamokoti Peetam awarded by Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, and the Simha Dhwani Samrat awarded by Sri Swamiji of the Vysaraya Mutt.
Sri Srinivasan is a trustee of the Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer Trust and the Maharajapuram Santhanam Foundation, institutions that aim to promote classical music by honouring musicians
