Annamayya Kala Peetham presents the play Satya Harishchandra, depicting the tribulations and ordeal of King Harishchandra. The play consists of two parts, Kala Kaushikudi and Veerabhau, and is of 3 hours duration. Written by Lakshmi Kantham, it is being performed by Visakhapatnam artists.
K Satti Naidu, aged 50, playing the lead role of Satya Harish Chandra, is a well-known theater personality. Rajanna, Venkateshwara Rao and Kutumba Rao, among others, can also be seen performing in this play.
Satya Harishchandra is the story of Harishchandra who is forced to leave Ayodhya with his family, by Vishwamitra and Nakshatra. Nakshatra further employs various means to torture and scare them, but Harishchandra braves it all.
Harishchandra is forced to sell his wife Taramati and son Rohan. He also sells himself to a low caste cemetery owner named Veerabahu, and gets renamed as Veerdas.
When Rohan dies at the hands of Vishwamitra, Taramati takes Rohan to the cemetery. But even after Harishchandra recognizes her, he asks her to get money to pay for the last rites.
Vishwamitra puts Harishchandra to the final test by forcing him to behead Taramati. When the king passes the test, the sage returns his kingdom, and also grants him half of his own powers.
