The Alliance Francaise of Hyderabad, in association with the Hyderabad Film Club, is screening a French movie Samia at the Sarathi Studios in Ameerpet, on 9th March. The film is directed by Philippe Faucon, and casts Lynda Benahouda, Mohamed Chaouch, Kheira Oualhaci, Nadia Koutei El, Yamina Amri and Lakhdar Smati.
15-year-old Samia lives in Marseille's periphery. 6th in a family of 8 children of Algerian descent, she suffocates in the moralistic atmosphere made oppressive by beliefs and rules she respects but no longer shares. Yacine, her unemployed older brother, justifies himself by upholding family and religious traditions. Older sister Amel has excluded herself from family life by her involvement with a boy from a different cultural background. Samia’s other sisters are completely focussed on their academic achievement.
And Samia, with a series of school failures in her wake, forced to take up technical studies that don’t suit her, obliged to keep her first romance secret, becomes aware that it is necessary that she alone decides just what to do with her life.
The film was awarded the 20th Anniversary Award and Prize of the City of Amiens, at the Amiens International Film Festival in the year 2000.
Entry is free for everyone. Please contact the Alliance Francaise at 2770-0734/2770-0736 or Bh S S Prakash Reddy of the Hyderabad Film Club at 2373-0841/93910-20243 for further details.
