Art - An English Comedy Play

My Theater Cafe and Expressions Theater Club are presenting an English comedy play "Art" on 5th March at Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University Auditorium, Nampally. The play is written by French playwright Yasmina Reza and directed by Sonal Gandhi. Kaushik as Marc, Alfan as Serge and Karan as Yvan form the cast.

Art concerns the cataclysmic effect on three friends - Serge, Marc, and Yvan - when Serge, indulging in his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive and completely white painting. As the three men engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship.

As the drama unfolds, one might wonder whether Art is about debates over artistic values or about the complexities of friendship. The play helped Yasmina receive the 1998 Lawrence Olivier Award for the best comedy, and the 1998 Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award for the best play.
