World Virasat 2013: Titanic String Quartet: Events in Hyderabad

SPIC MACAY, in partnership with Rikskonsertene (Concerts Norway), is jointly organising Titanic String Quartet concerts at Delhi and Hyderabad during November 12?22, 2013. These concerts, being organised under World Virasat 2013, aim at promoting classical musical heritage amongst the younger generation. A total of 17 concerts have been planned to be hosted at various educational institutions in Delhi and Hyderabad.

The origins of the string quartet (music for 2 violins, viola and cello) can be traced back to the 16th century (baroque trio sonata), in which two solo instruments were performed with a bass instrument and a keyboard.

The quartet form came to rise through Italy to Austria in the 18th century, and was developed to perfection through the composing eras of Joseph Haydn and W A Mozart. The form of the quartet is usually a piece of music with a duration of about 20-40 minutes in four sections.

Four people and sixteen strings is the basis of the quartet, and the audience will meet young musicians - Bjarne Magnus Jensen (violin), Vegard Johnsen (violin), Jon Soensteboe (viola) and Audun Sandvik (cello), who will play excerpts from string quartets.

The Titanic String Quartet will play extracts of compositions of famous western composers - Edvard Grieg (1843-1907, Norway), Franz Schubert (1797-1828, Austria), Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741, Italy), Ludvig van Beethoven (1770-1827, Germany), Dmitri Shostakovitch (1906-1975, Russia), Joseph Haydn (1732-1809, Austria) and Giacomo Puccini (1858?1924, Italy).
