To commemorate World Dance Day on 29th April, SPIC MACAY Andhra Pradesh is celebrating World Dance Series with Kathak performances by Malabika Mitra from 24th to 26th April at Visakhapatnam and from 27th to 29th April at Hyderabad.
The following is the schedule of the Hyderabad series:

A front-ranking Kathak dancer, Malabika Mitra has studied both the Jaipur Gharana and the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak. She received her initial training from Pandit Ramgopal Mishra of Jaipur Gharana. Later, she continued her training under Vijay Shankar and Om Prakash Maharaj.
Mitra, a medical graduate from the batch of 1979, studied her Masters in Music from Allahabad. She bagged a gold medal in her Masters, and even acquired the "Nritya Praveen" title.
Her other awards include "Shiromani" by Asian Paints, "Singar Mani" by Sur Singar Samsad (Bombay), "Abhinav Kala Samman" by Abhinav Kala Parishad (Bhopal), and "Mahakaal Sangeet Ratna" by Madhukali (Ujjain). She was also chosen Best Dancer Of India by the Sunday Mail (Delhi) in 1989, and the Best Dance Of 2004 by the West Bengal government.
She has been featured in a number of dance festivals in the country, including Kathak Mahotsava in Delhi and the Ghungroo Festival and Kathak Prasang in Bhopal. She has also performed abroad, in the USSR, Spain, France, Nepal and other countries. Mitra has directed and choreographed Kathak ballet programs for Doordarshan as well.
Mitra was selected for Senior Fellowship in the field of Kathak in 1997 by the Ministry Of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India, for her research on Old Kathavachan Shaili.
