What does a modern day “sangeet pandit” look like? Oh Yes Thyagarajan is an accounts officer at Shalimar Paints and a pre-eminent carnatic vocalist. Through his concerts the world over (Japan , Singapore, USA, Middles East etc. ), he remains a traditionalist of Manodharma Sangeetam .
Born in Thanjavur as the son of Sangeeta Bhushanam O. V. Subramanyam, he is one of three brothers, all of who are established vocalists. He received his prelimminary training from Tiger Varadachariar and Tanjore Ponniah Pillai, whereas advanced trainning was imparted to him by Lalgudi Jayaraman and T. N. Thyagarajan. He has many albums to his credit (including one in the Guru Shishya series by HMV), and is the Dean and the Head Of The Department Of Music at Annamalai University.
Kalasagaram is bestowing the title of Sangeet Kalasagara on this venerable artist today evening. . The function will be inaugrated by K. Ramakrishnan, chairman and MD of Andhra Bank, while the guest of honor is Guru Karaikudi Mani.
