On the occasion of the 32nd Annual Sri Thyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival from 15to to 21st January, Vignana Samithi is organising a grand veena recital by Ayyagari Shyamasundar and Ayyagari Jayalakshmi Shyamasundar, on 16th January.
With Nemani Somayajulu on the mridangam and Bachu Janardhan on the ghatam, the veena duo will strum some of Saint Thyagaraja's kritis, including Gurulekha Yetuvanti in Gowri Manohari ragam, Brovabharama in Bahudari ragam, Inti Soukhyamani in Kapi ragam, Gyanamosaga Radha in Purvi Kalyani, Nagumomu Ganaleni in Abheri, Pahi Rama in Yedukala Kambhoji ragam, Shobhane in Pantu Varali and Nagumomu Ganavani in Madhyamavati ragam.
Ayyagari Shyamasundar was born in 1948, and belongs to the famed vainika music family of Vizianagaram. His father Ayyagari Someshwara Rao was also a veena vidwan, and his mother was the sister of another veena vidwan, Pappu Someshwara Rao. Shyamasundar's wife, Jayalakshmi Shyamasundar, was the daughter of Pappu Someshwara Rao, and so, talent came naturally to the husband-wife duo.
Both Ayyagari Shyamasundar and Ayyagari Jayalakshmi Shyamasundar were the disciples of their fathers, Ayyagari Someshwara Rao and Pappu Someshwara Rao, respectively. Shyamasundar accompanied his father to many concerts in India and abroad. He has completed his diploma in vocal and veena from the Andhra University. He has been a senior A-grade artiste of the All-India Radio since 1965.
He was adjudged the Best Veena Artiste of 1978 by the Madras Academy, and of 1979 by the Krishna Gana Sabha. He also received the National Award for the music ballet, Nadabandham. He served as a lecturer in various music colleges of Andhra Pradesh for 17 years, and retired as Principal of the Government Music College, Vijayawada, last year. He has more than 200 disciples.
