The much felicitated and recognized Kuchipudi danseuse Vanaja Uday brings to life the story of the celestial beauty Urvasi, in a ballet at Lalita Kala Thoranam on the 13th of March at 1830 hrs.
The story is an interesting one, as any about a gorgeous apsara is sure to be. They were after all the divine equivalents of today's 'legally-blonde' beauts, always unsuccessfully tempting choleric sages and getting needlessly cursed.
When Rambha descended from Indralok to woo Narayana Muni, he was so pissed off that he told her go slop on a face pack for the rest of her inglorious life while he gets himself another ravishing babe in front of whom Rambha would look as seductive as a schoolboy. And so was Urvasi born, appropriately from Narayan Muni's thigh, after which she attended the Harvard of dance-schools at Bharath Muni's. Here, she didn't pay too much attention, leading to a curse of being returned to earth for sometime. Wandering along, she came across Pururavudu and fell deeply in love with him, and as stories do with all apsaras, hers ended nicely too.
Vanaja Uday is currently a dance lecturer at Potti Sriramulu Telugu University and in the course of her 25 year life so far as a Kuchipudi dancer, she has given over 1000 performances.
