Stephen Slawek is Professor of Music (Musicology/Ethnomusicology) at The University of Texas at Austin. He began to study sitar in 1969 with the late Dr. Lalmani Misra, then was accepted in 1977 as a disciple by the world renowned Pandit Ravi Shankar in the traditional thread tying ceremony (ganda bandhan). He continued his training in the advanced techniques and repertory of the Maihar Gharana of Baba Allauddin Khan under the great maestro while completing graduate degrees in ethnomusicology and pursuing a career in academia. Professor Slawek has performed extensively in India, Europe and the United States, sharing the stage with such notable Indian musicians as Zakir Hussain, Swapan Chaudhuri, Sukhvinder Singh Namdhari, Kumar Bose and with the maestro himself, Ravi Shankar. He has authored several publications on various aspects of the musical culture of India, has read numerous papers at scholarly conferences, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Ethnomusicology. He is the current editor of Asian Music, the Journal of the Society for Asian, which is the leading journal in ethnomusicology devoted specifically to topics of Asian music. Professor Slawek teaches academic courses on the musics of India and other Asian cultures and graduate seminars in ethnomusicology. He has taught the performance practice of North Indian instrumental music to hundreds of students since joining the faculty of the School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin in 1983.
