On the occassion of World Theatre Day, Sutradhar is presenting Siyaah Haashiye, a dramatized narration of Sa'adat Hasan Manto's short stories in Urdu, on March 27th at Lamakaan. The play has been conceived, designed and directed by Deepti Girotra.
History reminds us that we have seldom learnt from our mistakes. Very rarely do we remember the pain of the wounds inflicted by us on our own humanity. Over the time, there seems to have been a benumbing of our senses.
Black borders drawn with the same dark blood that oozed from the land that was ripped to pieces. More than 60 years have passed, 55 since Manto himself was laid to rest, but the blood stains of that massacre still haunt the generations on both sides of the divide. Dates have changed, places have changed, and so have the names, but the nature of man remains the same, and the struggle against our own self continues.
Published in 1947, Siyaah Haashiye is a collection of short and very short stories written by Sa'adat Hasan Manto, a man who had little regard for the societal or literary norms of any time. In this collection, Manto has captured the truth and downfall of humanity as he saw it.
