The Society To Save Rocks is conducting a rock walk on 20th June, to the rocks near Pragathinagar in Kukatpally. Participants can assemble either at the road opposite Maitrivanam (Ameerpet) at 3:30pm or at the main gate of JNTU at 3:40pm.
Rock walks are nature treks organized by the Society, to different rocky areas in and around Hyderabad. They are usually conducted in the afternoon (and occasionally in the early morning) of the 3rd Sunday of every month. This week, the trek will include the rocks at Pragathinagar and nearby areas.
To prevent the indiscriminate destruction of the ancient granite formations of the Deccan Plateau, a group of artists, photographers and environmentalists from Hyderabad has been working for the protection of this rocky landscape since 1992. In 1996, they formed themselves into a registered society, and since then, the Society To Save Rocks has expanded to include many other citizens, from students to housewives to businessmen and bureaucrats. It has about 300 members now, and is presided over by Narendra Luther.
The Society won the Heritage Award in 2003 from the Indian National Trust For Art And Cultural Heritage (INTACH), a Certificate of Excellence for service in the field of Tourism Promotion from the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2003, and the National Tourism Award for the Best Non-Government Organisation (NGO) In The Sphere Of Tourism from the Government of India, in 2002-03.
No fees are charged. You need to wear sensible walking shoes, long pants and a cap, and carry drinking water. Walkers should heed the safety instructions given by the guides.
