For all those of us who're ready to pounce upon chances at being judgemental about people who choose beggary or stealing for their livelihood, here are some revelations - starvation is no place to exercise self-respect or ethics.
Access Livelihoods Consulting India Pvt. Ltd. is organising Tathya-II, a Short And Documentary Film Festival, on 27th & 28th November, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. Some of these documentaries were featured at "Jeevika: Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival" organised by the Centre For Civil Society in Delhi.
Pistulya, a documentary by Nagaraj Manjule, will be screened on the 1st day, at 3:10pm. The film is the story of a boy 'Pistulya', from the Pardhi community, a nomadic tribe of Maharashtra. Since long, the community has been notorious as a community of thieves. Due to this misapprehension of society towards the tribe, the transformed people of the community are not only still being deprived of their basic rights, but are being still labeled as thieves and being tortured. Through his film, the director attempts to break societal hypocrisy towards the people of nomadic tribes.
Pistulya is starving for education and is looked after by a widowed mother who tries hard to make both ends meet for mere survival. She cannot afford to educate her son, and neither does she find it necessary, as she has to strive hard merely to meet their starvation.
She does not hesitate to beg for satisfying her daily needs. Ultimately, due to her poverty, she is left with no option but to send Pistulya to get trained to be a thief.
Though Pistulya becomes a thief, his desire to get an education finds expression every now and then through his emotions and acts.
