REVIEW FOR TATHYA 2 - SHORT...

A bunch of adivasis says no to 'development', and wage a war for development of a different kind - development that will not snatch the fertility of their land and the trees of their forests.

A screening of the video, "Gaon Chhodab Nahi" will be held in Ravindra Bharathi on 27th November, at 2pm.

"Gaon Chhodab Nahin" ("We Will Not Leave Our Land") is the defiant cry of the Adivasis of Kashipur in Orissa against indiscriminate bauxite mining in their land. In this parable about the effects of kamikaze industrialization, the adivasis ask the God of development whose side He is on. The wheels of development have crushed their forests and polluted their natural sources of drinking water.

In a scene that portrays the exploitation of the hapless tribals, an industrialist is shown drinking bottled water because all the water sources have been polluted by 'development', but the poor villagers have no alternative other than sticking to the meagre, polluted sources. The film tries to raise questions about what real development is, and to draw attention to the relentless struggle of the adivasis against the usurping of their land.

The film has been directed by K P Sasi, who has made more than 20 documentaries about various people's movements in the last 25 years. He has made 3 feature films which have received national and international recognition. His music video "America-America" is an anti-war film, and "Gaon Chhodab Nahi" is the latest creation to his credit.
