Renowned controversial documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan will be screening 3 award-winning documentaries on 7th & 8th August, at La Makaan. Each of the screenings will be followed by an open discussion with the film maker.
Mitron De Yaad Mein documents the violence and terror in Punjab, a land torn apart by religious fundamentalists and a repressive government. After examining the political turmoil of the late 1970s, and the rise of Sikh fundamentalism, the film concentrates on the legacy of Bhagat Singh who has now become a legendary figure. Today, the state eulogizes BHagat Singh as a nationalist while Sikh separatists portray him as a Sikh militant.
However, Singh was neither. Just prior to his death, he wrote a book entitled "Why I Am An Atheist". A band of brave Sikhs and Hindus carry Bhagat Singh's secular legacy from village to village.
In the religiously-charged countryside there, ideas of internationalism now carry a price. Mitron De Yaad Mein is a look at identity politics in India today.
