REVIEW FOR WAR AND PEACE -...

Renowned controversial documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan will be screening 3 award-winning documentaries on 7th & 8th August, at La Makaan. Each of the screenings will be followed by an open discussion with the filmmaker. War And Peace will be screened on the first day at 5:30pm, and the length of this documentary is 150 minutes.

Filmed over 4 tumultuous years in India, Pakistan, Japan and the USA, following nuclear tests in the Indian sub-continent, War And Peace is a documentary journey of peace activism in the face of global militarism and war. It moves from a description of home-made jingoism to a focus on how an aggressive United States has become a role model, its doctrine of "Might is Right" only too well-absorbed by aspiring elites of the developing world.

As we enter the 21st century, war has become perennial, enemies are re-invented, and economies are inextricably tied to the production and sale of weapons. In the moral wastelands of the world, memories of Gandhi seem like a mirage that never was, created by our thirst for peace and our very distance from it.

Anand Patwardhan is an Indian documentary filmmaker, known for his activism through social action documentaries on topics such as corruption, slums dwellers, nuclear arms race, citizen activism and communalism. Some of his films include Ram Ke Naam (In the Name of God) (1992), Pitr, Putr Aur Dharmayuddha (Father, Son and Holy War) (1995) and Jang Aur Aman (War and Peace) (2002), which have won national and international awards.

Patwardhan was born in 1950, in Mumbai, and completed a BA in English Literature at the Bombay University in 1970, a BA in Sociology at Brandeis University in 1972, and an MA in Communication Studies at McGill University in 1982. Many of his films faced censorship by the Indian authorities, but were finally cleared after legal action. His film 'Bombay Our City' was shown on TV after a 4-year court case, while 'Father Son and the Holy War' (1995) was released after a prolonged court battle which lasted 8 years.
