We could all do with a re-incarnation of any of the famed gods or prophets, whether or not they ever really walked the earth. Durga Rao Gadde brings you the message of one of the greatest prophets of peace - the Buddha, in semi-abstract and realist depictions.
He has picked elements from various books and developed his own representation of the philosophy. This passionate and humble painter waxes eloquent about how a much less advanced society 2250 years ago, could resolve its conflicts without manifest rage and war. On the other hand, the world today seems filled with aggression and domination by those who are well off, over those who aren't. Durga Rao Gadde seeks to make relevant, the philosophy of Buddha, to our time.
These paintings have been displayed in January this year at Kalachakra in Amaravati, and met with tremondous adulation. They were displayed in a gallery created by Durga Rao himself. This thatch and bamboo gallery housed the exhibtion for 15 days after which it was dismantled. Alongside was constructed a free resthome that sheltered more than 3000 monks during those 15 days. Many Llamas from Delhi had the opportunity to visit this exhibition too.
Durga Rao himself came from an indigent background and is an artist who believes in drawing on his experiences of suffering and toil as much as fame and accolades.
