Pallaki Seva Prabandham was written by Sahaji II, the Maratha King of Thanjavur who ruled during 1684-1712. He was a well-known lyricist, and composed verses in Telugu, Sanskrit and Marathi. Sahaji was a patron of culture, and encouraged literature and poetry.
The story of the Prabandham is as follows. Parvathi, unable to bear her separation from Sankara, sends her sakhis to him with a message, requesting him to return. Sankara arrives in a pallaki (palanquin), which has been elaborately described in the book.
The opera was recorded in its full form with its literary compositions like daruvus, vrittams, and vachanas. It involves the usage of several commonly sung ragas.
A companion book to the opera is also being released on the occasion. The book includes the original Prabandham, a foreword by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, critical essays by Pappu Venugopala Rao and Davesh Soneji, and a translation of the poem in English.
