There are few times when an event is more prestigious to a performer than one that he himself is featuring in. Yes, this is more Mahankali Mohan's big day.
On the occasion of its 9th Anniversary, Sri Vaishnavi Art Theatres is organising Kuchipudi Nrityotsav 2007, on 14th May, at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. The evening will have Kuchipudi dance recitals by the disciples of Guduri Mahankali Mohan.
Mohan's disciples D Laharipriya, D Vishnu Madhavi, J Trikeshvi, S Sravani, Ch Binduvani Vaishnavi, and T Sirisha, along with Mohan himself with the nattuvangam, D V S Sastry on lead vocals, Sridharacharya on the mridangam, Venkat on the flute and Pasumarti Phanibala on the violin, will start the recital with a Krishna Shabdam, which will be followed by Ramayana Shabdam, Jayamu Jayamu, Jatiswaram, Adhyatma Ramayanam and Tulajasi Shabdam.
Mahankali Mohan is a senior lecturer of dance at The Bhakta Ramadas Government College For Music, Secunderabad. He learnt Kuchipudi from Dr Vempati Chinna Satyam, and is a leading nattuvangist not only for Kuchipudi but also for Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam.
He has 27 years of dancing experience, and has accompanied leading dancers for nattuvangam to many countries like Germany, USA, England, China, Italy, Holland, France, Trinidad, Switzerland, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and Mauritius. He created a record of sorts with his nattuvangam for 3,000 performances. He established a Kuchipudi institute at Chikkadpally in 1987, through which he has trained more than 700 dancers till now.
Sri Vaishnavi Art Theatres was started in 1998, and has since organised many cultural programs, promoting art and culture. It not only stages music and dance programs, but also theater, primarily mythological plays. Through felicitations and awards to deserving upcoming artistes, it provides a platform for them to showcase their art to the world.
