Banyan Tree is presenting a grand music concert by Pt. Shivkumar Sharma on the santoor and Ustad Zakir Hussain on the tabla, at the Hyderabad Marriott Hotel & Convention Centre, on 26th January.
Zakir Hussain, son and disciple of renowned tabla maestro the late Ustad Alla Rakha, showed unusual talent on tabla drums as a child. He began his musical career at the age of 7, and was touring by the age of 12. At 19, he accompanied the legendary sitar player Pandit Ravi Shankar to the United States, to perform at Fillmore East. He has received many awards for his contributions to the world of music. In 1988, he became the youngest percussionist to be awarded the Padma Sri by the Indian government. In 1990, he was awarded the Indo-American Award, and the President of India honored him with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1991. In 1992, one of the projects 'Planet Drum' that Zakir Hussian did with Mickey Hart, received a Grammy for the Best World Music Album.
Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, born 13 January 1938, in Jammu, is a Hindustani classical musician. He is a master of the santoor, a folk instrument from the valley of Kashmir. He is credited with single-handedly making the santoor a popular classical instrument, to the extent that the santoor and Pandit Sharma are synonymous. He is a recipient of many national and international awards, including honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA (1985), the Sangeet Natak Academy Award (1986), the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar (1990), an honorary doctorate from the University of Jammu (1991), the Padmasri (1991), the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Award (1998), and the Padma Vibhushan (2001).
