In commemoration of the centenary of Indian Cinema, tributes are being paid to some personalities from Indian cinema.
This feature celebrates cinematographer Marcus Bartley. Marcus worked as cinematographer in the films Yogi Vemana and Guna Sundari Katha under the Vauhini banner. And with Vijaya Films, he worked in the films Sowcaaru, Pathala Bhairavi, Pelli Chesi Choodu, Chandraharam, Missamma, Maya Bazar, Jagadeka Veeruni Katha and Gundamma Katha, amongst others.
He was known for his trick photography in Pathala Bhairavi, where he used shadows in the song sequences to convey different moods. Bartley also created an illusion of a flying Maya Mahal in the climax of the film.
Bartley's cinematography in the film Chandraharam was one of the milestones in his career. The dance sequence "Kaluvalu-Chandrudu" in the movie was telecasted on BBC television, in a time when India didn't have any television.
