Padma's house in Bomminampadu, a village in the Godavari Delta, was built keeping in mind both design and eco-construction. Built by her and family, it is 10 feet square, and made of materials which are easily available.
Parallelly, Syed Imtiaz's haveli in the old city of Hyderabad is an example of timber craftsmanship lime mortar construction and town house design. Built by his great grandfather, it is a compact building in three storeys with its own courtyard, which keeps the interiors cool and affords the family privacy and peace from the dense and noisy surroundings. It is fighting a valiant battle to survive in the modern metropolis of high-rise apartments and elevated metros.
Bringing together these two apparently disparate worlds and taking a deep look at our altering habitats is the event "Living Architecture - Village Vernacular / Urban Heritage".
Through photo exhibitions, talks, models, presentations, discussions, even a village visit thrown in, the program seeks to bring to Hyderabadis little known facts and facets of how people make and live in their own spontaneous and unique abodes.
