Pushpamala N will speak about her works during her visit at the festival. Pushpamala N was born in 1956 in Bangalore. She graduated in Economics, English and Psychology from the Bangalore University in 1977, where she studied under Indian artist Balan Nambiar. Thereafter, she studied BFA & MFA in Sculpture at M S University of Baroda.
Pushpamala's first solo exhibition was at the Venkatappa Art Gallery, Bangalore, in 1983. Initially, she was a sculptor, but by the 1990s, she completely shifted to photographic works.
She frequently used herself as a model in her own work, using elements from popular culture in her art to explore place, gender and history.
She has taught and lectured on arts. Pushpamala is the recipient the National Award, 1984; the gOLD mEDAL at the Sixth Triennale, New Delhi, 1986; the Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship for residency at St. Martin's School of Art, London, 1992-93; a Senior Fellowship by the government of India during 1995-97; and an Arts Collaboration Grant, India Foundation for the Arts in 2000. Her works have been showcased in galleries and museums across the world. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
