Under the aegis of the All India Crafts Mela, Shilparamam is presenting a kanjira solo recital by V Nagarajan from Nagpur, on 26th December, at 6:30pm.
A senior percussionist, 80-year-old V Nagarajan is the son of violin Vidwan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Papa K S Venkatramiah. He had his early training from the mridangam Vidwan Tanjore Vaidyanatha Iyer for a few years, and then continued his training from the mridangam Vidwan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Palghat T S Mani Iyer for several years both in mridangam and kanjira.
Nagarajan had his first concert at Trichy with Sangeetha Kalanidhis Alathoor Brothers, in the year 1950. Thereafter, he accompanied a galaxy of maestros and provided them kanjira accompaniment. He introduced the kanjira to the American audience when he joined the faculty at the Wesleyan University as a Visiting Professor in the year 1967. In the year 1974, he taught American students at Berkeley, California.
Nagarajan had toured many countries, such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Middle East, Indonesia, Nagarajan has performed in several counties like Thailand, Singapore, USA, Canada, UK and Japan, and also participated in the "Festival Of India" conducted by the then Soviet Union. He had been crowned the Asthana Vidwan of Sri Sankara Mutt by His Holiness Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Mutt, and Kalaimamani by the government of Tamil Nadu.
