Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh turns 70, and to commemorate this occasion, Perfect Harmony Productions and Cisne for Arts are presenting an evening of ghazals by the maestro himself on 20th February at the Chow Mahalla Palace.
Jagjit Singh is one of the top-most ghazal singers in the country, born in Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Although his late father wanted him to become a bureaucrat by joining the Indian Administrative Service, he chose the world of music. He learnt music under Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for 2 years in Ganganagar, and later devoted 6 years to learning the Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms of Indian classical music from Ustad Jamaal Khan of the Sainia gharana.
With a career spanning over 4 decades and a repertoire comprising 50 albums, Jagjit Singh has sung in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali, many of which topped both the ghazal and the general music charts. He has done mostly solo albums, but his numbers with Chitra Singh (his wife) and Lata Mangeshkar are some of the memorable ones. His songs Sarakti Jaye Hai Rukh Se Naqab Aahista Aahista, Aah Ko Chahiye, Baat Niklegi To Door Talak Jayegi and Woh Kagaz Ki Kashti are some of his best renditions. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2003.
Entry tickets are priced at Rs. 3,000 / Rs. 2,000 / Rs. 1,500 / Rs. 1,000 / Rs. 500 per head. Please contact Krishna Atreya of Cisne For Arts at 96187-75384 for further details.
