You never knew there was a day dedicated internationally to dance, did you? You would have guessed, but you never KNEW, admit it! Well, this one occurs on the 29th of April, declared so by UNESCO to spread awareness and promote dance education at schools. The date commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet.
Now Hyderabad decides to hop onto this bus as well as our own local dance studio STEPS brings on the first ever International Dance Day celebrations in Hyderabad. The event is being wholly sponsored by STEPS, kind-of a philantrapic initiative to spread awareness of contemporary dance in the spirit of the designated holiday.
While one may argue that shaking one's booty to Himesh Reshammiya's animalistic mating calls qualifiy as dancing, pretty much, R Prithviraj of STEPS strongly disagrees. So there will not be any Bollywood numbers and pelvic thrusts and hip sways. Only subtlety, class and grace are allowed here, as participating dance schools will be screened for their presentations in an audition on the 12th of April. Last date to apply is the 5th of April.
STEPS itself shows you the way with their special contemporary and hip-hop performances Prithviraj and his group. A guest performance of a fusion of Kathak and contemporary dance by Mansi from Delhi and her dancers from Russia will be another highlight.
The event begins at 1800 hrs on the 29th of April at Hari Hara Kala Bhavan. Please contact R Prithviraj at 5568-1230/92471-16425 for further details.
