Students from the city can now test their mettle in the world of spellings. The 2nd season of the much awaited 'India Spell 2010 - HDFC Standard Life Spelling Bee' is here with a buzz and a bang. It is brought to you by The Times Of India group under the patronage of Scripps National Spelling Bee USA, a prestigious annual event in the US with a lineage of 85 years. The event in town, which is supported by HDFC Standard Life, will be kickstarted on December 12 at 9am at the Little Flower High School.
This fun-filled quiz is aimed at helping students improve their spellings, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, work on their pronunciations, and give a fillip to their proficiency of English. The competition consists of various methods to test students on spellings, even offering help by way of proper and repeated pronouncing of each word as well as etymological meanings.
After the city-wise rounds, the winners will participate in the Grand Finale in Mumbai. The winner of the Grand Finale, along with a parent, will be sent by The Times Group to experience the Scripps National Spelling Bee at Washington DC in May 2010.
The inter-school contest will consist of a Written Round, followed by the Oral Spelling Contest Round. In the Written Round, questions will be presented in objective / multiple choice format. Students must prepare for the contest using the Oxford Dictionary.
The oral contests will include Spellings, Complete The Sentence, Proverb Completion, Antonyms and Synonyms. Each school will be represented by 3 teams comprising of 3 students each, and students from Standards 6, 7, 8 or 9 may participate.
Paricipants are required to come in their school uniforms for the inter-school competition, and must carry their ID cards or authorization letters from their respective schools. Students will be provided with answer sheets at the venue but are expected to bring 2 ball-point pens, a writing board, dry snacks and water with them.
