The final league match of the Group B Elite Division Ranji Trophy match between Hyderabad and Uttar Pradesh is on from 25th to 28th December, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.
The Hyderabad team is being captained by Arjun Yadav, and the team, virtually knocked out of the tournament, is playing to stay in Elite Group for the next year. The team has a total of 10 points from the ten matches played, having lost one match, drawing three and winning only one, and is placed sixth in the overall points table of seven teams.
It has a very slim chance of making to the semifinals, based on the results of the other two matches being played between the top team Baroda and the 4th-placed team Orissa, and 3rd-placed team Andhra and bottom-placed team Bengal. If both the unfancied teams Orissa and Bengal topple their opponents, and Hyderabad manages to beat the stronger Uttar Pradesh, then they are through to the semifinals along with Baroda.
Hyderabad lacked consistency in their performance, having lost to a weaker team (Orissa) and drawing some probable winning encounters. The batting with the exception of Ravi Teja, and bowling with the exception of Pragyan Ojha, have failed to click. The fielding is not remarkable either.
On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh is under the captaincy of India discard Mohd. Kaif, and has some strong players such as allrounder Suresh Raina and spinner Piyush Chawla, both of whom played for the Indian National team. UP has 14 points from five matches, and is placed in the second position in Group B. It is followed by Andhra with 13 points, and needs an outright win to assure its place in the semifinals.
