On the occasion of the All India Crafts Mela from 13th December to 4th January, Shilparamam is organizing a Harikatha recital by C Brahmananda Reddy on 23rd December. The Harikatha will be accompanied by Seelam Koteshwar Rao on the violin and Yandamuri Subbarao on the mridangam.
The Harikatha will begin with a Vinayaka Stuti, followed by the story of Sundara Kanda the 5th kanda in the Ramayana. It starts with Lord Hanuman's travel to Lanka in search of Sita, his meeting Sita in the Ashoka Vanam, his slaying of Akshaya Kumar, the son of the King Ravana, and his returning to Sugreeva's kingdom.
C Brahmananda Reddy is a renowed Harikatha artist who has born and bought up in Guntur district, and is a disciple of K Vishwa Rupa Chary. He is a diploma holder in Harikatha, and also a B-grade artist at All-India Radio and at Doordarshan. He was awarded the titles of Kala Vaachaspati, the Harikatha Bhakta Sudhanidhi and the Naada Chintamani.
He has performed at prestigious sabhas, including Ravindra Bharathi, Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha and Shilparamam. He is the only artist to have performed a Harikatha on Ramayana in 24 days, and has been awarded Swarna Kankanam by Dasari Narayana Rao, film director and ex-union minister.
Harikatha is a composite art form comprising of story telling, poetry, music, drama, dance, and philosophy. Any Hindu religious theme may be the subject for the Harikatha. During its peak, Harikatha was a popular medium of entertainment, which helped transmit cultural, educational and religious values to the masses.
