History is in the making – only, for 21-year old Alex (Daniel Bruehl) time stands still. Just before the fall of the Berlin wall his mother (Katrin Sass),a proud citizen of German Democratic Republic,collapses and is in a coma - and sleeps through the victory of capitalism. When she surprisingly opens her eyes after 8 months she wakes up in a new country. But as her heart is too weak and wouldn’t be able to bear the excitement she’s not supposed to know what has happened. In order to save his mother’s life Alex has to keep German Democratic Republic alive on 79 square meters.
