Hear it all in the words of silence, as Beyond Silence is brought to you by the Hyderabad Film Club in collaboration with the Association Of German Culture, Hyderabad.
The film, which takes place in a re-unified Germany, is filled with symbolism and thematic depth relating the communications difficulties of one family with those of the nation as a whole. Lara is a girl whose parents are both deaf, and thus she becomes their link to the outside world.
When Clarissa, her aunt, presents Lara with a clarinet, the little girl is enthralled, and immediately sets about learning how to play. Her parents get angry, in part because of Lara's infatuation with something they cannot understand or participate in, and in part because they are afraid that it will take her away from them.
In addition to having real emotional resonance and dramatic sweep, Beyond Silence (Jenseits der Stille) is one of the best-acted motion pictures of the '90s. It has won The Bavarian Film Award, The Golden Plaque Chicago 1997 and The Audience Award Vancouver, among others.
